What will colleges expect you and the student to contribute to college costs? This calculator helps estimate your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which represents the amount colleges may expect you and the student to contribute to the cost of attendance for one year. This estimate is based on the Federal Methodology, which is seen as the starting point for financial aid decisions at any college that offers Federal financial aid.
When inputting the ‘Age of This College Student’, be aware that this information should be the age the student will be at the beginning of the year in which they hope to receive financial aid. Parents can also enter different income amounts (both current and what they might make in the future) into the tool to see how their EFC may change in relation to their earnings. Please remember that this is only an estimate. Your actual calculations may differ and/or the formula may change.

Note: We do not retain any record of the information you submit using this tool. This calculator provides an estimation of what you will be expected to contribute towards educational expenses for one academic year of college. Your official EFC is calculated by the Department of Education when you complete a FAFSA.
